“The funnest day of my year”

“The funnest day of my year” was how one young person described our first Gillingham Youth Collective community event as he was getting out his sumo suit…

He’d just flattened his opponent and was last seen heading off to have a go on the giant inflatable version of the children’s game, ‘Hungry Hippos’.

Completely free, there were pro scooter, bmx and skate demos and open competitions, inflatables and the chance to have a go at graffitti art, plus plenty of free ice pops and cakes made by Gillingham Young Parents group. The weather wasn’t great but it held out and everyone had a great time.

The event was run as part of the five year project which uses young people talking to young people to come up with a programme of activities. It’s early days yet but there have been over 400 responses so far to the survey the young people produced. Take a look at the 50second film the Media Makers produced to encourage young people to share their ideas… and if you’d like to know more about our project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Gillingham Youth Collective it has its own dedicated website.
